Love and Eden gathers the work of a lifetime into nine sections, each named for a love: Eden, poetry, science, nature, heartbreak, fear, death, the senses, and laughter. Through Searls’ lens of time, this collection of poetry begins in "Eden," a five-part catalog of a 1950s Florida boyhood that runs from hibiscus and DC-3s to Winn-Dixie. Each section of the book is prefaced by one italic line about the father who is losing his memory. The book exits through childhood's end.

This collection carries within its finely crafted verses two vocabularies, the technical and the devotional. The jackdaw's nest collects Galileo's lens; a garden sonata travels from supernova to hummingbird; Joan of Arc stands behind a wife's diagnosis; a descending T-cell count gives an elegy for a lost friend its spine. Ron Searls cultivates these narratives in a garden of sonnets, odes, and sophisticated verse in order to preserve the loves that once, maybe not so long ago, had felt so familiar.
